Realtime 3D generative animation on computer and LCD screen, in artist’s Corian frame, on artist’s Corian console table

During my Summer 2021 internship with the Thoma Foundation in Santa Fe, NM, this artwork was documented and prepared for loan. It had been previously flagged for treatment due to discoloration of the original monitor, which no longer allowed accurate display of the realistic rendering of the artwork’s scenery. When the work was unpacked and powered on, the original monitor did not function at all. This caused a cascade of issues that prevented the executable artwork file from running, so further condition assessment could not be done at the outset.

Replacement of the monitor was restricted by the internal dimensions and custom mount system of the Corian display case, as well as the cut-out framing the screen. I researched currently available monitors that matched the screen dimensions, resolution, and other key technical specifications for the graphics-heavy visuals, then contacted the John Gerrard Studio for approval. The new replacement monitor was much thinner than the original and would not be held within the custom mount, even with mechanical adjustment included in the mount’s design. Ethafoam blocks with volara were added to fill the gap and keep the new monitor securely in place.

After monitor replacement, the executable artwork file was able to run successfully and the display was compared to artist proof images. A critical file that specifies the output resolution of the Realtime 3D visuals was identified as the cause of previous errors when a smaller test monitor was connected. I created documentation of the artwork powering on, running, and powering off, as well as a Condition & Identity Report that captures the custom computer’s essential features, integrated electronics, and flags the resolution file. A Treatment Report and photography were also added to the artwork’s records.
